- The Rise of Clean, Vegan, and Conscious Beauty in the Cosmetics Industry 목차
As consumers become increasingly aware of the impact their choices have on the environment, the beauty industry is responding with innovative products and practices that align with the values of the MZ generation. According to the 2023 Cosmetics Industry Analysis Report by Mezzomedia, 70% of respondents would choose conscious beauty products if they were priced similarly to conventional options.
Conscious beauty emphasizes the use of eco-friendly ingredients, manufacturing processes, and packaging, which appeals to consumers who prioritize value-based consumption. Two recent product releases demonstrate how the beauty industry is evolving to meet these demands.
Rael Beauty, Amazon's top-rated clean beauty brand, has introduced the Miracle Clear Skin Fit Inorganic Sunscreen, a product designed to protect both the wearer's skin and the environment. Recognizing the detrimental effects that chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate have on coral reefs and marine ecosystems, Rael Beauty has formulated their sunscreen to be reef-friendly. The 100% inorganic formulation uses non-nano particles to reflect UV rays, minimizing the potential for absorption into the skin. Additionally, the sunscreen's improved texture offers a light, non-greasy application experience.
OB Beer, one of Korea's leading liquor companies, has partnered with green bio venture company Lafique to launch the Lala Bear Beer Barley Spent Grain Hand Cream. By utilizing beer waste, specifically barley spent grain, the companies have created a zero-waste upcycled product that is rich in nutrients like fiber and vitamins. The hand cream features a brightening effect and patented moisturizing ingredients derived from brewer's grains. To further its eco-friendly commitment, the packaging uses International Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper material rather than plastic.
In addition to these product innovations, companies are exploring sustainable packaging solutions. CJ CheilJedang has developed a cosmetic container using a blend of industrial biodegradable and marine biodegradable materials. This technology has been implemented in Wakemake's Water Velvet Vegan Cushion No. 21, CJ Olive Young's own brand, resulting in the first cosmetic container made with PHA in Korea. By incorporating biodegradable materials in all aspects of the container except for the mirror and inner compartment, the company has taken a significant step toward reducing plastic waste.
As the beauty industry continues to adapt to the demands of eco-conscious consumers, we can expect to see even more innovations in product formulation and packaging that prioritize the well-being of both people and the planet.
